Sat., June 6, 2012 | 10 am – 3 pm
$10 per Boy Scout; troop leaders and adult chaperones are free

Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts are invited to earn their Geology awards at the Burke with a special day of earth science activities. Geologists will be on hand to answer questions and direct activities for earning the Geology Merit Badge, Webelos Geologist Pin, Cub Scout Belt Loop, and Geology Academics Pin. Activities are scheduled to include mountain building, earth science careers overview, origins of fossils, volcanoes, mining and mineral recovery, Mohs’ scale of hardness and more! A merit badge counselor is available to certify completion.

To register for the Boy Scout Geology program, sign up at the Seattle Council event site. Register early as the event will close when full.

For more information, contact Burke Education 206-543-5591 or email burked@uw.edu.

Note: When we last went, it was a comprehensive program taught by a PhD, with the assistance of a geological engineer. Scouts who come with an eagerness to learn should be able to complete their badge on a Saturday afternoon. Parents can visit the rest of the museum, or remain with their Scouts (also open to Cubs and Webelos). Workbooks are provided by the Burke, and need to be completed in order to earn the badge.

If you haven’t yet completed your Indian Lore badge, several of the requirements can be fulfilled at the Burke exhibits after you finish Geology. Or take your GPS and explore some of the many Geocaches in the area for your Geocaching badge. This is an especially good idea if you’re taking the ferry and bus.

Cascade District Merit Badge Fair

November 19, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (registration begins at 8:30 am) We will offer classes during 3 sessions:

Class 1: 9:00 – 10:30
Class 3: 12:30 – 2:00

Registration is now open.

If you are interested in a particular merit badge, teaching a merit badge at the fair, or have other questions please contact Clay Wilson

Location
LDS Bellevue South Stake Center 15205 SE 28th Street, Bellevue,
Behind the LDS Seattle Temple, East off 148th Avenue SE at the fire station
Mapquest is mostly correct, but follow SE 28th all the way to the end.

All Boy Scouts in the Cascade and Alpine Districts – *Now open to Boy Scouts from other districts & councils*

This is an opportunity for Boy Scouts to meet merit badge counselors, get started on a merit badge, possibly complete a badge, or complete a partial merit badge. Completing a merit badge start-to-finish in 90 minutes is highly unlikely. However, if you come prepared, having done most of the work beforehand, it is possible to finish the discuss, demonstrate, and explain portions of the badge.

What should you bring:

    * Signed Blue Cards
* Paper and pencil for notes
* Merit Badge Book or printout of requirements
* Worksheets
* Evidence of completed projects
* Sack Lunch (lunch will not be served, but there is a break to eat sack lunches)
* Wear your uniform

One really nice thing about Cascade’s fair is that they will add badges if there is enough interest. So, when you sign up, make sure to use the request block at the bottom for other badges you may be interested in; say, Coin Collecting, Inventing, or Weather.

This is a day based around seven first responder type merit badges. Alan Peters, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Portland is the honorary chair for the day.

If you have already earned a badge please choose “already earned”. We will do our best to give everyone their top 3 badges. The price goes up to $30 on September 1st, so hurry and sign up today!

“Calling all Tinkerers to EurekaFest at OMSI!

Become one of the first Boy Scouts in the U.S. to earn the new Inventing merit badge! EurekaFest at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Inventing merit badge counselors will be on hand to work with you at the museum and available to counsel you until you complete the merit badge.

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) partnered with the Lemelson-MIT Program, to develop the Inventing merit badge. The Lemelson-MIT Program is also sponsoring EurekaFest at OMSI. The badge focuses on the importance of being creative and inventive with solving real world problems. BSA and the Lemelson-MIT Program jointly introduced the badge at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in June and to the greater BSA community at the 2010 National Jamboree. Activity patches will be given to boys who bring their blue card and enthusiasm for inventing to EurekaFest at OMSI!

Download the worksheet for the Inventing merit badge and complete requirements 1, 3 a-c, and 5 before coming to EurekaFest at OMSI. There will be a meeting room at OMSI for Boy Scouts to discuss these requirements and get signed off on these and other requirements that can be met while at EurekaFest at OMSI. By the end of the day, Scouts will be prepared to go home and build an invention to solve a real-world problem of their own.

Boy Scouts must wear their complete Class A uniform for free museum admission to EurekaFest at OMSI.
(Free admission is for Boy Scouts only and does not include family members or friends.)

Click here for more information on the new Inventing merit badge.”

Yes, we know the patch is one of the UGLIEST of all, but the badge is pretty cool. It no longer requires a patent, but does need a good idea. OMSI is a fantastic science museum! Bring your whole family and make a day of it. If you live more than 100 miles away, an annual membership is only $60 for the whole family — the best part of that is that it’s a reciprocal membership; you can use it all year long at Pacific Science Center, the Museum of Flight, and 200+ more museums in the USA. Since the badge requires and idea, model, and prototype, Scouts should be prepared to receive a “partial” here, but should then be well-equipped to finish the badge locally.

Absolutely the most amazing merit badge clinic of all! Troops from as far away as Montana make the trip to McMinnville, OR (about 4 hours from Silverdale) to participate in the annual clinic — and it’s definitely worth it!

The Evergreen Aviation Museum (Spruce Goose Museum) has its own Scouting coordinator. In addition to Astronomy, Aviation, and Space Exploration classes throughout the year, hundreds of Scouts get together for the annual Scouting University.

What better place to learn about Aviation than the home of the Spruce Goose and dozens of other aircraft! Instead of simply reading about Space Exploration from a book, enjoy the simulators, the actual crafts, and a rocket launching you’ll not forget inside the Space Museum. Pay a little extra and watch the I-Max Hubble 3-D movie.

It is the Merit Badge University that is the capstone of the Scout education, though. Choose from eleven different badges offered as three-hour or full-day blocks (additional badges may be added). Complete your prerequisites in order to have your blue card signed off. In addition to the day’s offerings, Astronomy happens on the night of the 28th. Camp in the Oak Grove on Friday and/or Saturday night for $7 per person and add days to your camping log. The grove is beautiful, well laid-out, and complete with full bathrooms (including showers).

For Scout groups that are well funded, consider adding a Night Flight. Scouts get to spend the night INSIDE the museum.

Troops coming through Eugene, OR might consider adding a day to complete their Climbing badges at the Crux Rock Gym.
Troops coming from the North might consider the Railroading badge through Columbia Gorge Model Railroad Club, or the Chehalis-Centralia station.
