golf

One of the badges that is the most fun of all! Learn how to play, then go out to the links for 18 holes. Note: They don’t need to be consecutive holes, and two 9-s may be a lot more practical for Scouts who are just learning.

We live in a golf heaven (haven?). Here are a few recommendations and comments about some area golf courses. Please let us know about YOUR experiences with them.

Village Greens: Port Orchard

.
At only $10 for 18 holes for juniors ($15 for adults), you’re not going to find a better price. This is an executive-style course, meaning it’s shorter than many. Most holes are par 3s. That’s a lot more encouraging for a youngster that’s likely going to be twice par. The traffic is relatively low, and the walk is flat. That’s good for the beginners because they likely won’t have other golfers breathing down their necks. Especially if you take your Troop during the week. Overall, probably the best place for a merit badge or Troop outing. 871-1222.

Gold Mountain

.
golf03 golfLooking for something a little more challenging than Village Greens? Gold Mountain offers more bells and whistles at a slightly higher price (starts at $12/$22, and goes up depending upon times and course choice.) You might choose to get your feet wet at Village Greens, then play Gold Mtn when you have the strokes down. Gold Mountain’s Cascade course was ranked #1 in the state for municipal courses by Golf Digest. The Olympic course is probably too challenging for beginners.

Trophy Lake

.
golf02 golfOkay, I’ll say it. Trophy Lake is simply beautiful. Everything about it is upscale — including the price. Junior rates start at $40 and climb. Still, if you can afford it, it’s manicured and gorgeous. One troop reports that they are very willing to let Scouts practice on the putting green with advance arrangements. If you’re adventurous, you might start your badge there, move to VG, and finish at GM. Or some other combination. It never hurts to gain experience in different environments.

We don’t have experience with the courses below, but would be glad to add yours.

Alderbrook Golf

Sign up on their website for free golf on your birthday. Otherwise, green fees begin at $25.

McCormick Woods

$29 special after 1 pm includes one adult and one junior PLUS a cart. 1:00 tee-times for juniors are only $10. Really great winter rates, including military specials.
