We started our program using the original requirements and will update same when / if National gets it out so the Scouts don’t miss out.

We do need badges if they are going to be made available, otherwise we plan on making up our own recognitions using deer antler, fly tying materials, etc. (something befitting the nature of the badge).

Any idea as to when National might come through on their end – we are down to 9 months on the schedule and losing time every day!?

The ‘historical’ merit badges have been put on hold by BSA until they get us all the updated requirements. This was the original announce, says new reqs are out by the end of the Month (January), but not seen yet: http://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2010/01/historical-merit-badges-help-boy-scouts-celebrate-scoutings-past.html

Then news came out that it was ‘on hold’ until the finish up the reqs. I’ve heard it should happen by end of Feb, but heck, it’s March 1 now and I don’t see the updated requirements yet… http://usssp.blogspot.com/2010/02/historic-merit-badge-program-on-hold.html

Yes, Cubs can earn both the 100th anniversary patch/ribbons AND the 100th anniversary patches.

Do you know if the cub scouts can earn these special badges? I realize that some may be tougher than others for the younger boys, but I would hate for them to miss out on a chance to get something so unique!

Hi Steve,

Are you local? At this time, there’s only one merit badge counselor for Signaling in our council. Great idea about the Ham radio operators! Hadn’t thought about that. I know there are people around who know Morse. Finding the Semaphore expert might be a little more difficult. Want to volunteer?

Why do scouts have to go to a Museum for the signaling merit badge. All they need to do is find a Ham radio operator who knows code – they just aren’t that rare! There is likely a fair percentage of Scouters that possess this skill.

Heck – I was even a MB councilor for Signaling for Verdugo Hills Council way back in the 1970s. It was easy since I learned semaphore in scouts, and got my ham ticket!
