coincollecting

Coin collecting can be a fun and profitable hobby! It doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive, though. Collect what you like. If you have to start out small, that’s okay. Your collection will grow through the years.

You’ll get a lot more out of the badge (and the hobby) if you talk to experienced collectors.

Mr. Bill’s in Belfair has hosted Collections merit badge days. He has an eclectic shop, with a little of everything, including coins. 360.275.9383

It’s doubtful your parents are going to let you travel to the “nearest” mint for a merit badge. But you can visit the mints online. Not quite as much fun, but interesting nonetheless. Besides, the mints DON’T give samples.

Where to get your coins

Short on cash? St. Vincent de Paul (on Callow in Bremerton) sells foreign coins for $1.50 per bag. Bags usually have 7 or 8 coins from different countries in different denominations. Or, the State Quarters program can be started for as little as, yep, you guessed it, 25 cents. You can find interesting items at online auction sites, by visiting pawn shops with an adult, or by asking your parents if you can dig through their change drawers. Find what interests YOU.
