Climbing

Climbing is not only an important skill to have, but great exercise as well. It combines both long and short muscles with decision-making and problem-solving.

Where to climb

Eagle Scout, formerly of Troop 220, Ken Burkhart teaches a Climbing class at Edgeworks in Tacoma. The six hour class is tailored to the badge, and covers all requirements from start to finish. The cost is $50 per Scout.

One way to get the training and (indoor) experience is through Vertical World in Silverdale . They have a merit badge counselor on staff, and will set up Scout MB classes that are taught direct to the badge. It takes two three-hour classes to complete (with some homework between). The class will prepare you for outside climbs, but most importantly it will show you the safety rules.

Need more practice? If you’re a military dependent (or dependent of a retiree), the Jackson Park teen center does weekly 3-hour climbs at VW for only $5. Alternatively, they offer a homeschool PE day (through 4H) once a month for $10 (see their calendar page).
