Hike Report – Mission Creek Trail (Tahuya)

When: June 2006
Where: Mission Creek Trail, Tahuya, WA
Distance: Well, since we got lost, our distance is only an estimate of 7 miles. Probably more.
Level: Moderate – Moderate. There are some hills and occasional steep parts, but much of the trail is relatively flat and well marked. (5/9) Could be a lot easier if you stick to wider, flat trails.
What was the most fun?
Feeling alone amidst the huge trees
Realizing how quiet the wilderness can be
Watching J swat mosquitoes because he wore a scented deodorant
Using the map and compass
Leading
What we did:
Got lost
Hiked
Talked a lot
Shared water (won’t do that again)
Ate lunch
Dodged dirt bikes
Water Source:
Canteen
Water bottle
D’s water bottle (thanks for sharing!)
Although there are streams on the trail, I wouldn’t use them unless an emergency
What we saw:
Dirtbikes
ATVs
A lot of flowers
Meadows full of wildflowers
Well-maintained trails
The most challenging thing:
Dodging the occasional dirt-bike rider who wasn’t paying attention
Getting lost, more than once
A LOT of hills
Not knowing when we were going to finish
What I brought:
Not enough water
Ten essentials
Compass and outdated map
My new backpack
Camera
What we learned:
Bring more water than you think you’ll need if it’s hot
Don’t share your water with someone who is a water hog, unless it’s medically necessary; you won’t have enough for yourself
“Lost” is just another word for “on an adventure”

Suggestions for other people doing this hike:
Make sure to include some of the wide, flat service roads as a break from the whoop-de-do trails.
Bring a lot of water if it’s hot
Wear a hat
Don’t wear smelly deodorant. There are a lot of bugs.
Bring your camera; it’s just beautiful
Conclusion:
The meadow was just beautiful
This is a great hike if you’re looking for diversity in nature
Be prepared for hills
Totally worth it!
Adult’s note:
There are tons of trails criss-crossing in this area, so the hike can be as short or long as you want to make it.
Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday if you want to avoid the dirt-bikes; otherwise, make sure your last hiker is wearing something highly visible.
