Penrose Point State Park (Pierce County)
Penrose Point State Park is a 152-acre state park is located 16 miles south of Purdy, easily accessible off Highway 16. Several troops and packs have camped here, with heavily discounted park fees in exchange for service projects. Project difficulty can be tailored to individual troop or pack ability.
There’s a nice interpretative trail (an Eagle Scout project) that can be very good for plant identification. Eagle-project benches can be found throughout the park, providing a place to observe the abundant bird life. Group camp areas have covered picnic table areas, kybos, and water. There are easy hiking trails, especially good for younger Scouts.
Penrose is a good choice for a close-in campout where Scouts can work on requirements in a relatively quiet atmosphere.
Look for the Troop 220 sign on your left as you’re passing through Home. They have dry, aged firewood for sale at very reasonable prices — and it benefits a fellow troop.
